4th Annual Recap

January 9th, 2016

The 4th annual Public vs Private Challenge was bigger and better than ever in 2016. This was the second year at McDonogh and there are no indications that it will be moving any time soon. 32 teams participated this year and that seems like a comfortable number going forward. It was a full day of girls basketball action that included several games that went right to the final buzzer. The Public schools came into Saturday holding a two game lead in the all time series. The day ended with them holding that same two game lead as we ended in a tie for the 3rd straight year. The Publics won the first year four games to two. The series has been tied with each side winning 3 games in year two, 5 games in year three, and 8 games apiece this year. The all time series is now Public 20, Private 18. Here are the results from this year:

Catonsville 51, Spalding 37

Catonsville closed the court 1 action out with a win over Archbishop Spalding from the IAAM. Jen Gast had a big game for the Comets with 15 points.

Old Mill 56, Roland Park 54

This was arguably the most exciting game of the day as both teams played with intensity in front of a huge crowd. The biggest shot of the day was the game winning 3 pointer by junior Brandi Hall with 9 seconds left. Rebecca Lee was dominant inside for Old Mill.

Seton Keough 52, Oakdale 39

Sydney Mitchell scored 12 points to lead Seton Keough to a win of last year's 2A finalists Oakdale.

South River 42, St. Maria Goretti 37

Savana Herndon and Molly Folks both scored 8 points to lead South River over St. Maria Goretti of Hagerstown.

St. Vincent Pallotti 56, Southern Garrett 53

In another barn burner Pallotti was able to squeak out a big over Garrett County's Southern High. Tian Addison and Makayla Pippin scored 14 apiece for Pallotti and Hannah Franklin added 13 points. Sharp shooter Kamrin Weimer led all scorers with 21 points, making six 3 pointers.

Patterson Mill 51, Maryvale 40.

Kayla Mitchell scored 20 points for Patterson Mill  to offset the hot shooting of Molly Mcaleer who scored 22 for Maryvale in a hotly contested game. Both players received player of the game recognition.
